Contrary to popular belief, there is NO national database available. Each federal, state and county jurisdiction has their own set of rules when it comes to criminal records. There is no requirement to submit criminal records to a state or federal repository. Some county jurisdictions do not have online databases; they make records only available by a personal search of their database located in their county. The law enforcement database NCIC is not available to the public.
